I'm on a mission to organize and revamp my house. I have a large house that started as an upstairs-downstairs duplex, was combined as a single house, then had several rooms added on. It's slapped together, with parts of it seeming modern and parts of it stuck in the 1950's. There are walls and shelving units built on top of carpet and carpet installed over 5 layers of old, crappy vinyl installed over beat up hardwoods.
We've been here for 7 years now, and we've made changes as we could. Turquoise carpet in our bedroom was first to go, followed closely by the turquoise paint. We've done vinyl tiles in the kitchen and back room. We've re-painted almost everywhere. We've added shelving units, cable outlets, pulled up more carpet, and replaced appliances.
It's perfectly liveable, but it still needs a lot of work.
I'm going to blame this particular urge all on my friend P. This past weekend, we did a lot of fabric shopping and sewing and generally talking about sewing, and I got total fabric organization envy. She has all of these neat cabinets with stacked blocks of quilt squares...and I have piles.
Now, I do have to give myself a little credit. I tried to organize it. Heck, I devoted 2/3 of a bedroom to it, put in shelves for my fabric, got my sewing machines nicely set up, bought plastic bins with lids, stacked ribbons neatly in shoe boxes, etc. But it just hasn't worked. It's been moderately functional, but it's too cramped to spread things out like I need, so I inevitably have to spread to my bedroom or the dining room--the latter of which is nearly as far away from the sewing room as it can be. It's time for a change, to see if I can find something that will really work for me.
So.
The 1/3 of the room that was devoted to closet will now get the whole room. My stepdaughter now is going to get some space to make up for not having a closet of her own. The sewing items will move downstairs, where they will share space with my office and a little corner of the dining room. The kids' items in that corner of the dining room will migrate into their office. I'm also planning to work on my laundry room and probably the kids' rooms. By the time I'm done, I'll probably have touched every room in the house. Let's hope at least one of them gets finished!
Given my busy schedule, I'm doing a little bit at a time. Step 1? I need to get all of the sewing and crafting related items out of the room that will soon be our massive walk-in closet.
I have a lot more fabric than I feel like I have! This is...maybe half?
Once it's all out, I can pull in everything that belongs in the closet and try to come up with some creative storage options.
More work to come....
